Coronavirus: India's tally reaches 15.3M with 2.6L new cases
After seeing a slew of record spikes in coronavirus infections, India reported 2.6 lakh new cases on Tuesday. The nationwide tally has reached 1.53 crore. While the daily positivity rate slipped from 20.2% a day before to 17%, the worst-hit states conducted a lesser number of tests. Over 1,700 more patients died in the past 24 hours—the deadliest day—bringing the death toll to 1,78,769.
India reports 1,53,21,089 cases, 1,80,530 deaths
According to the Union Health Ministry, till Tuesday morning, India reported a total of 1,53,21,089 COVID-19 cases. The death toll has reached 1,80,530. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,31,08,582 patients have recovered, while 20,31,977 cases involve active infections. In the past 24 hours alone, India recorded 2,59,170 new infections and 1,761 fresh fatalities. 12,71,29,113 vaccine doses have been administered so far.
Maharashtra reports 59K new cases
A day after reporting a record high, Maharashtra saw a marginal dip in infections, reporting 58,924 new cases. However, the state conducted fewer tests on the day, testing 2,21,626 samples, indicating a high daily positivity rate of 27.4%. The state's tally has now reached 38,98,262, out of which, 6,76,520 infections are active. 351 deaths also pushed the death toll to 60,824.
Active cases cross 1 lakh mark in Kerala
Kerala also saw a marginal dip in infections, adding 13,644 new cases. However, the daily positivity rate remained a high 15.6% with 87,275 tests conducted on the day. With this, active cases in the state crossed the 1 lakh mark, reaching 1,03,004. The cumulative number of cases has reached 12,53,068, while 21 more deaths pushed the death toll to 4,950.
Karnataka witnesses deadliest day in 8 months
A day after reporting a record 19,067 infections, Karnataka added 15,785 new cases, marking a high daily positivity rate of 12.8% with 1,23,212 tests. The total number of infections climbed to 11,76,850, including 1,42,084 active cases. The state also recorded a whopping 146 more deaths; the deadliest day in nearly eight months. The death toll has now climbed to 13,497.
Infections decline in Andhra Pradesh; deaths surge
With 5,963 new cases, Andhra Pradesh saw a dip in infections for the second consecutive day, even as the number of tests remained consistent. However, the state reported 27 more deaths, the highest number of single-day fatalities in six months. The death toll has now reached 7,437. The total number of infections has now reached 9,68,000, including 48,053 active cases.
Uttar Pradesh surpasses Delhi to become 6th worst-hit
UP has now surpassed Delhi as the sixth worst-hit state. The state added 28,287 new cases with a record daily positivity rate of 14.1%. With 167 deaths, the state also witnessed its deadliest day. The death toll has reached 9,997. The total number of cases has now climbed to 8,79,831, while the number of active cases rose to 2,08,523.
Delhi reports 240 deaths, highest toll in a single day
Delhi also witnessed a marginal dip in infections without a drastic decline in the number of tests. The national capital reported 23,686 new cases, a day after a record 25,462 new cases. However, the daily positivity rate stood at a worrisome 26%. A record 240 deaths pushed the death toll to 12,361. The cumulative number of cases rose to 8,77,146 (76,887 active cases).
