    Coronavirus: India reports record spike of 2.1 lakh new cases

    India on Friday reported 2.1 lakh new coronavirus infections, marking the biggest single-day spike since the pandemic began.

    The nationwide tally has now neared 1.43 crore.

    Meanwhile, more than 1,000 more patients died in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 1,73,123.

    Maharashtra—the worst-hit state in India—continued to report a high daily positivity rate in coronavirus infections.

    India reports 1,42,91,917 cases, 1,74,308 deaths

    According to the Union Health Ministry, as of 8 am on Thursday, India reported a total of 1,42,91,917 COVID-19 cases. The death toll has reached 1,74,308.

    Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,25,47,866 patients have recovered, while 15,69,743 cases are active.

    In the past 24 hours alone, India recorded 2,17,353 new infections and 1,185 fresh fatalities.

    11,72,23,509 vaccine doses have been administered so far.

    Worst-hit

    Over 60,000 new cases reported in Maharashtra

    Maharashtra reported its second-biggest spike with 61,695 new cases, taking the tally to 36,39,855. 2,34,452 samples were tested, indicating a high daily positivity rate of 26.3%.

    349 new fatalities pushed the toll to 59,153.

    The state has the highest number of active infections (6,20,060) in India, most of which are concentrated in Pune (1,12,923), Mumbai (84,753), and Thane (83,193) districts.

    Delhi reported second-biggest spike

    With 16,699 new cases, Delhi also reported its second-biggest single-day spike. 82,569 samples were tested, indicating a positivity rate of 20.2%, rising sharply from 3.5% on April 1. The tally has reached 7,84,137 (54,309 active cases). The death toll has reached 11,652 with 112 deaths.

    Uttar Pradesh

    UP sees record rise of 22,000 infections

    In Uttar Pradesh, daily new infections have surged at an alarming rate, growing more than eight-fold from 2,600 on April 1 to a record 22,439 on April 15.

    Active cases also rose from 11,918 to 1,29,848 during the period. 35,865 active infections are in Lucknow alone.

    The cumulative tally has now risen to 7,66,360. 104 more deaths pushed the death toll to 9,480.

    Karnataka

    Karnataka adds 14,000 new cases; 70% in Bengaluru Urban alone

    Karnataka, the third worst-hit state in India, reported a record single-day spike of 14,738 new cases (10,497 cases were from Bengaluru Urban alone).

    The state's total caseload has now reached 11,09,650.

    The state has 96,561 active cases, out of which, 71,827 are concentrated in Bengaluru Urban.

    66 more fatalities on Thursday pushed the death toll to 13,112.

    Madhya Pradesh

    Madhya Pradesh reports record rise in infections

    Madhya Pradesh is one of the most concerning states, reporting a record single-day spike of 10,166 cases (21.2%).

    The state's infection count has reached 3,73,518, with 55,694 active cases. Currently, there are 10,351 active cases in Indore and 7,314 in Bhopal; these are the two worst-hit districts in the state.

    The state's death toll has reached 4,365 with 53 more fatalities.

    Chhattisgarh

    Biggest spike of 15,000 new cases in Chhattisgarh

    Chhattisgarh also saw a record single-day spike of 15,256 new cases, only the second time since the pandemic began that daily infections rose above 15,000.

    The total caseload has reached 5,01,500, which includes 1,21,769 active cases and 5,442 deaths.

    The state reported 105 more deaths on Thursday, 60 in Raipur alone. At 25,394, the district also has the most active cases.

    Gujarat

    Gujarat adds record 8,000 new cases

    With 8,152 new cases, Gujarat also reported the biggest single-day rise in infections.

    81 patients also died over 24 hours, the most in a single day, taking the fatality count to 5,076.

    The total caseload has reached 3,75,768, which includes 44,298 active cases.

    Ahmedabad district has recorded the most number of active cases and deaths: 13,152 and 2,542 respectively.
