Conmen arrested for demanding Rs.1cr to 'save' Unnao rape-accused MLA
BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar, Unnao rape accused, is in the news again, but for contrary reasons. Two men have been arrested for posing as BJP leaders and CBI officers to dupe Sengar's wife of Rs. 1cr. They demanded the money assuring they'll get Sengar released. Sengar, Bangarmau MLA, is accused of raping a minor last year. Sources say CBI has confirmed the charges.
Why is Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the news?
Sengar and his aides allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl last year. She reported the crime several times, but no action was taken against him. The case made headlines when last month, she and her family tried to kill themselves outside UP CM Yogi Adityanath's house. After much hue and cry and reports of political pressure, Sengar was taken into CBI custody on April 13.
Sengar had help from top politicians, bureaucrats and cops
As the case developed, Sengar and his associates kept being in the news for more incidents of abuse of power. Preliminary investigation revealed several high-profile politicians, bureaucrats and cops were involved in shielding him. Amid pressure, police ignored even the CMO's instructions.
The accused demanded money to 'free' Sengar
On May 5, Sangeeta, his wife staying in Lucknow, got a call from a 'BJP leader.' He demanded Rs. 1cr to bribe CBI officials and get Sengar released. When she said it wasn't possible, he asked for Rs. 50L. The next day, a 'CBI officer' called her, offering assistance. He asked her to give him the money at CBI's Lucknow office on May 7.
Cops nabbed the men after tracking their phones
Sangeeta shared the update with her relatives, but some of them got suspicious and informed police about the phone calls. Cops tracked down the two numbers and nabbed Alok and Vijay, Lucknow residents.
CBI finds evidence of police interference to help Sengar
Meanwhile, sources said CBI has found enough evidence against Sengar in the rape case. The agency also confirmed that his aide Shashi Singh had helped lure the victim and guarded the room when Sengar raped her. CBI found loopholes in police probe too: among others, cops delayed medical checkup of the victim and kept Sengar's name out of the first FIR in the case.
