Rajasthan Congress organizes 'LPG funeral' to protest rising prices
The Congress in Rajasthan is angry over rising prices, but it is creative too. Today it's conducting the 'funeral' of an LPG cylinder in Ajmer, a sign of protest against increasing gas costs. Incidentally, the Ajmer and Alwar by-elections are scheduled for just a few days later on January 29. Congress is hoping this move will help it woo voters.
Center recently rolled back its controversial monthly price hike rule
In July'16, the Center had allowed oil firms to increase price per 14.2kg cylinder by Rs. 2 monthly in an attempt to eventually eliminate subsidies. In May'17, the quantum of hike was doubled, allowing firms to increase prices by Rs. 4 from June'17. Months later, in October'17, the Center withdrew the controversial decision. In this period, price per cylinder went up by Rs. 76.5.
'Rise in prices hit poor badly, GST added to woes'
Congress' planned funeral procession will start from Sukh Sadan at Shrinagar Road and end at the Gandhi Bhavan Chauraha. "The rise in prices has most hit the poor. People were already reeling under the impact of a rise in prices of essential commodities, and the GST has added to their woes," said Danish Abrar, head of Rajasthan Congress IT Cell which organized the protest.
