CNG, piped gas to become costlier in Delhi-NCR
Prices of CNG and piped gas were raised by 90p/kg and Rs. 1.15/kg respectively in Delhi-NCR, bringing them to a two-year high. Thus from midnight tonight, CNG in Delhi will cost Rs. 40.61/kg, and in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad, Rs. 47.05/kg, IGL confirmed. From Rs. 25.99/standard cubic meter (scm), PNG will now cost Rs. 27.14/scm in Delhi, and Rs. 28.84/scm in NCR.
IGL to offer discounts at select pumps during certain periods
Between 12:30 AM to 5:30 AM, CNG refill in select IGL pumps would cost Rs. 39.11 per kg in Delhi and Rs. 45.55 per kg in adjoining areas. Effect of the CNG price hike will be minimal on vehicles: a 2p/km increase for autos, 4p/km for taxis, and 26p/km for buses. IGL supplies PNG to about 6 lakh households in Delhi/NCR.
Understanding the reasons behind price hike of CNG, PNG
Rates of natural gas prices are set every six months depending on average rates fixed in surplus nations like Russia, Britain, and China. For the April-September period, it rose to $3.06 per million metric British thermal units (mmBtu), making import costlier for India. The increase in the price of domestically produced gases also contributed to the hike.
Rates hiked in Mumbai too, though effect on drivers negligible
Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) announced a price hike of Rs. 1.23/kg for CNG, and Rs. 1.04/scm for PNG in Mumbai effective yesterday. Citing increase in MGL's price cost, the company said price hike was inevitable. "Even after revision, MGL's CNG continues to offer savings of about 61% and 35% compared to petrol and diesel respectively at current price levels in Mumbai," a statement read.
