Bhopal: Closeted researcher kills himself to "save" gay partner
A 27-year-old nanotechnology researcher in Bhopal jumped into a lake, believing he would save his gay partner by killing himself. Neelotpal Sarkar planned the suicide thoroughly: he had tied a tag on his wrist with his name, address and contact number before jumping. He had also posted a video titled "Final Note" on Facebook before leaving home, where he talked about Goddess Kali's "instructions."
It all started with a dream in October 2016
In the video, Sarkar recalls how Kali appeared in his dreams one night in October'16 and spoke of "eternal bliss." Apparently, She told him he would meet his 'soulmate' within a year. "But the day I propose to him, I will die, and the day he realizes I'm the one, he will die." "I can never let that happen to him, whosoever he is."
He had tried killing himself earlier too, but was saved
In his note, Sarkar writes he visited Guwahati's Kamakhya Temple to pay obeisance to "the goddess of desire." He reportedly tried to kill himself there, but was saved. When his family found out, they took him to a psychiatrist, but Sarkar never took prescribed medicines.
Sarkar's family apparently didn't know about his homosexuality
When his relatives saw the video, they tried to contact him but failed. His landlord in Saketnagar finally filed a missing person complaint after he didn't appear for two days. Almost everyone who knew him says Sarkar was an ardent Kali devotee, but his relatives apparently didn't know about his sexual orientation. Sarkar's last wish was that his soulmate sets fire to his pyre.
