Class 12 exam question offends primary school teachers in UP
A question in UP's Class 12 English board exams has riled primary school teachers in the state. Arts and Commerce students were asked to write a letter to the district magistrate "drawing his attention towards the laxity of primary school teachers in performing their duties." Calling it a "deliberate move to defame primary teachers," they have threatened to approach the Allahabad HC.
It was part of a five-mark question on February 21
Class 12 students faced the five-mark question in English. They had to answer either this, or they could write a letter to the "director of secondary education to enhance the basic amenities in colleges for imparting better education." It appeared in the question paper given to students in Lucknow and adjoining areas on February 21. Photos of the question went viral on social media.
'Such questions raise questions on paper-setter's mentality'
Deepak Mishra, a primary teacher in a school in Koraon tehsil, Allahabad, said the question is "a sheer insult to us and our dedication." Vinay Singh of the Primary Teachers Association said, "Such kind of question raises questions on the paper-setter's mentality." Devendra Srivastava, another member, said that if the UP education board didn't take action, "we'll be forced to approach the court."
Will take action after probing the matter: Education board assures
UP Board secretary Neena Srivastava said the question didn't mean to hurt sentiments. "Clear directives are issued to the teachers engaged in setting question papers to avoid asking questions which could raise a dispute," she explained. "I'll find out how this type of question was set by experts and then passed by moderators. Action would be taken after that," she assured.
