Chhattisgarh: 12 laborers killed as their bus falls into ditch
At least 12 people were killed and 14 others were injured after a bus transporting employees from a private distillery plunged into a ditch in Chhattisgarh's Durg district on Tuesday night. The bus, which was carrying approximately 40 distillery workers home after their shift, lost control and fell about 50 feet into a "murum" mine pit. Murum is a type of soil used mostly for construction.
Investigation and hospitalization following the accident
An initial investigation revealed that the bus lost control and veered off into a ditch, Superintendent of Police (SP) Jitendra Shukla told ANI. District Magistrate Richa Prakash Chaudhary confirmed that 14 of the injured have been hospitalized and are currently stable. She also announced that an official inquiry will be initiated to determine the exact cause of this unfortunate incident.
Company has offered compensation to the victims
"The bus was carrying workers of Kediya Distilleries located in Kumhari area. So far the deaths of 12 people have been confirmed. Of the 14 injured, 12 have been taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Raipur ,while two others are undergoing treatment at a hospital here," Chaudhary said. She also revealed that the company has offered compensation to the victims, and they will also get similar help from the administration.
National and state leaders respond to tragedy
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and wished a swift recovery for those injured. He assured that the local administration, under state government guidance, is providing necessary assistance to the victims. Chhattisgarh's Chief Minister, Vishnu Deo Sai, also conveyed his condolences, affirming that all necessary measures are being taken to treat those wounded in this tragic event.
