Chennai: Men accused of raping 11-year-old thrashed in court
Out of the 17 men accused of raping an 11-year-old girl with hearing disability for seven months in Chennai, some were thrashed by a group of lawyers today. The assault, a video of which has gone viral on social media, took place before a magistrate in a women's court, amid rising public anger. Lawyers are also not willing to represent the accused. Security guards, lift operators, water suppliers among the accused
On Monday, the mother of the victim lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that her daughter, a Class 7 student, was sexually assaulted multiple times by various men at many places in their 300-flat apartment complex. Subsequently, the police apprehended the accused, including security guards, lift operators, and water suppliers. The accused, who are in judicial custody, were produced before a court today.
What we know about the assault on the girl
Police said that four of the accused had confessed to rape, while two have admitted molesting the girl. Reportedly, the girl was first assaulted by a 66-year-old lift operator who invited other men to join in and film the girl being raped. As the ordeal progressed, the girl was reportedly sedated with injections and soft drinks laced with drugs.
