Chennai: Woman rescues newborn from drain, names him 'Freedom'
Chennai resident Geeta has become the hero everyone is hailing, after she rescued a newborn baby from a drain near her house on Wednesday, August 15. Geeta was alerted by the milkman about shrieks in the area and she decided to check. She assumed it must be a kitten, but found a child. The woman's compassion is winning hearts on the Internet and rightly so.
Geeta pulls baby out, washes him to get dirt off
When Geeta looked into the drain, she found the child, whose umbilical cord was intact. She applied mild force to see if the baby could be pulled out. On being confident, he could be pulled out, Geeta rescued him and untwined the cord to not hurt him. She asked onlookers for water and later washed the child thoroughly to remove dirt.
Baby gets his name - Freedom
"I am naming him Suthanthiram (freedom) since we found him on Independence Day. I am glad he got his freedom to live," Geeta said. The baby was taken to Egmore Hospital. Earlier he had breathing issues, but is reportedly fine now.

Despite hospitals having cradle for unwanted-babies, child was abandoned
The police said they are investigating the matter. Thankfully, the drain didn't have water, else the child could've been harmed. Notably, Tamil Nadu's hospitals have a cradle for unwanted babies, a scheme which was started by former CM Jayalalithaa. Despite this, Freedom was abandoned in a drain. Meanwhile, Geeta's gesture has won the Internet and people are eager to help the kid.
