Modi government to construct 74 new tunnels for ₹1L crore
The Indian government has announced an ambitious plan to build 74 new tunnels, spanning a total distance of 273km. This project, estimated to cost around ₹1 lakh crore, is part of a larger initiative aimed at bolstering India's highway network. The announcement was made by Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport and Highways at the second edition of Tunneling India conference, organized by FICCI.
Gadkari emphasizes performance audits
Gadkari has emphasized the importance of conducting regular performance audits for all ongoing projects. He stated that "performance audit is more important than financial audit," highlighting its role in ensuring project efficiency.
MoRTH favors foreign partnerships in tunnel construction
Gadkari has expressed support for granting a 51% stake to foreign partners in joint ventures for tunnel construction. He believes this approach will make sure that only serious and technically qualified players bid for tunnel projects. The minister also underscored the need for technological advancements and cost-effective solutions, to meet the unique challenges posed by India's diverse terrain while upholding high-quality standards.
Gadkari calls for innovative solutions in infrastructure development
Gadkari stressed the need of adopting best global practices in infrastructure development, and formulating strategies tailored to specific terrains. He highlighted the challenging Himalayan regions as areas requiring special attention. The minister suggested innovative solutions like "precast technology and push-back techniques," to address persistent issues such as landslides.
Current status and future plans of tunnel projects
Gadkari revealed that the Centre has already completed 35 tunnels covering a distance of 49km, at a cost of ₹15,000 crore. Additionally, 69 more tunnels spanning 134km, are currently under construction with an estimated cost of around ₹40,000 crore. He advocated for a comprehensive evaluation of projects from the initial detailed project report (DPR) stage to implementation.
