Five CBSE teachers suspended for miscalculating marks in answer sheets
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday said it had suspended five teachers after glaring errors in marks in answer sheets of Class 10 and 12. The board learnt about their laxity after re-evaluation found that several students were given 50-55 marks less than their actual score. For instance, a student who failed in Urdu passed after sheets went for re-evaluation.
Not only teachers' suspension, CBSE likely to serve schools notices
Though re-evaluation has been in place since years, this is the first time CBSE took action against teachers. Among the five suspended, three work in government schools and two in private schools. The board is likely to suspend teachers in Allahabad and Dehradun too. It may also serve notices to schools for mistakes in calculations. Officials said a detailed report is being prepared.
Despite flaws, CBSE says percentage of mistakes came down
Though there were differences in original and corrected marks, the CBSE said the percentage of mistakes has come down. Compared to last year, when 20,162 students of Delhi applied for re-evaluation and marks of 4.97% increased, this year, 11,083 students sought re-evaluation and scores of 3.26% got better. The board announced results of Class 10 and Class 12 in the last week of May.
Notably, CBSE wanted to scrap re-evaluation process last year
For dissatisfied students, re-evaluation has served as a boon. However, in 2017, CBSE wanted to scrap the process. After students and parents knocked on the doors of the Delhi High Court, CBSE reintroduced it on 'first-come-first-serve' basis. Not only this, the board set up two committees to look into evaluation-related problems. One committee analyzes discrepancies while another suggests systemic improvements in the evaluation process.
Re-evaluation will help students in Delhi University admissions
Considering the Delhi University admissions are underway and marks obtained in Class 12 are crucial for it, in absence of re-evaluation, many students couldn't have applied to the esteemed university. The board taking action against responsible teachers is a welcome step.
