CBSE denies 50% students seeking re-evaluation had marks increased, issues clarification
What's the story
After reports emerged that over half of the CBSE Class-12 students seeking re-evaluation had their marks increased, the Board has denied the claims.
"Out of 61L copies of Class-12 students, 66,876 candidates applied for verification. Of these, there were changes in marks in only 4,632 cases, which is 6.9% of the total. Hence overall, marks changed in case of only 0.075% cases," it clarified.
Reports
Media reports apparently had exaggerated figures
Last month, TOI had reported that CBSE had received over 10,000 requests for Class 10 and 12 students for verification.
Days ago, the publication claimed that over half of the 9,111 Class-12 students who applied for re-evaluation had their marks increased.
Common mistakes included awarding less marks for correct answers, or not evaluating answers at all, it said.
Process
CBSE has a three-step process for re-evaluation
The process to seek re-evaluation is three-step: first, the student has to apply for 'verification,' wherein examiners check for totaling errors.
Then one can seek a copy of the answer sheet.
Only in the third step, 're-evaluation,' are answers re-checked and re-marked.
The process is costly: verification costs Rs. 500, photocopy Rs. 700, and re-evaluation (per question, maximum 10 questions) Rs. 100.
Topper
CBSE calls reports of new topper "baseless"
Reports also claimed that the CBSE has a new topper for the 2018 Class 12 board exams. Ishrita Gupta of Nagpur bagged an additional 22 marks - a whopping 4.4% - after re-evaluation of her answer sheets.
She shares the first place along with Meghna Srivastava, they said.
However, India Today now reports that CBSE has dismissed the story as "baseless and factually incorrect."
Marks
3,200 increases were between 1-5 marks: CBSE
Elaborating on the errors and corrections, the Board has said that of the 4,632 cases where marks were increased, 3,200 were between 1-5, which is otherwise considered zero error.
"Earlier the policy was to not affect any changes after re-evaluation if the changes ranged between 1-5 marks, as it is an accepted international norm that there will be 5-7% differences in evaluation between evaluators."

'Initiated action against 214 teachers for callous evaluation'
"The board has already initiated suspension and strict action in case of 214 teachers for callous evaluation. To minimise human error, CBSE will further strengthen the system with training of teachers and evaluators and technological intervention," the Board said.
