Unnao case: Kuldeep Sengar raped victim, CBI tells court
Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the now-expelled BJP MLA from Unnao, raped a minor in 2017, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told New Delhi's Tis Hazari court on Wednesday. The premier investigative agency took over the case after a massive uproar across the country. CBI claimed Sengar raped the victim on June 4, 2017. She was a minor at the time. Here's what went down.
A quick recap of the horrendous rape case
The Unnao rape case happened in 2017, but the victim's pleas went unheard. She had to attempt self-immolation outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence in 2018 to get attention. Shockingly, her father was taken into police custody and died. Last month, the victim met with a deadly accident, in which two of her aunts lost their lives and her lawyer was grievously injured.
Sengar took victim to a room, raped her
In court, CBI said the allegations which the survivor leveled on Sengar and his accomplice Shashi Singh were true. Apparently, Shashi took the victim to Sengar's house under the pretext of getting her a job. When she reached his house, no one was present there. The security guards were absent too. Thereafter, Sengar forcefully took the victim to a room where he raped her.
Earlier, police had dismissed the victim's allegations
Reportedly, the first person to know about the rape was the victim's aunt. The victim had also written a letter to CM Adityanath to complain about Sengar but to no avail. In fact, police had told a court in Unnao that her allegations were "baseless".
Interestingly, CBI is also investigating the road accident
Apart from the rape case, CBI is also probing the road accident which the victim's family claimed was engineered by Sengar. A few days ago, CBI raided as many as 17 locations in connection to the car crash. The agency also recreated the accident to understand how the truck, which had its number plate wiped out, hit the car, and what happened after that.
Earlier, SC ordered cases to be shifted out of UP
The victim's accident shed light on what is wrong with the system. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court also took cognizance of the matter only after the case prompted outrage. Last week, the top court ordered that all cases related to Unnao matter should be shifted out of Uttar Pradesh to Delhi. The victim was also airlifted from Lucknow's KGMU Hospital to AIIMS, Delhi.
