CBI raids RG Kar Medical College ex-principal's residence, 14 others
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a series of raids at the residence of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This action is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption charges against Ghosh. In addition to his residence, the CBI is also conducting searches at 14 other locations connected to this case.
CBI takes over corruption probe from SIT
The raids came a day after the probe agency filed a case against Ghosh, alleging financial irregularities at the Kolkata hospital, where a trainee doctor was raped and murdered on August 9. The Calcutta High Court had ordered a CBI probe based on a plea by Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of the hospital. Ali had requested an Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe into alleged financial misconduct at the institution during Ghosh's tenure.
Former principal accused of illegal activities
In his plea, Ali accused Ghosh of unauthorized use of unclaimed bodies, illicit sale of biomedical waste, and approving tenders in exchange for kickbacks from medical suppliers. Additionally, Ali alleges that students were coerced into paying between ₹5-8 lakh to pass exams under Ghosh's administration at the medical college. According to Ali, he lodged a written complaint at the state vigilance commission in July 2023, but no action was taken.
Polygraph tests conducted on Ghosh, others
On Saturday, Ghosh and four others were subjected to polygraph tests at the CBI's office in Kolkata. This group included two doctors, an intern, and a hospital staff member who were on duty when the trainee doctor was raped and murdered. The lie detection tests were carried out by a team of specialists from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Delhi.
CBI to submit progress report within three weeks
The Calcutta High Court has instructed the CBI to provide a progress report on its investigation within three weeks. As per standard procedure, the central agency has collected all necessary documents from state police and re-registered the FIR under its jurisdiction, keeping details unchanged. The final findings of this investigation will be presented before a special court by the CBI on September 17.
