RG Kar incident not gang rape, concludes CBI
What's the story
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has told the Calcutta High Court that the death of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was not a case of gang rape.
The CBI's position was submitted by the deputy solicitor general, who stated that the agency is investigating the involvement of individuals in a possible cover-up of the incident.
Parental appeal
CBI's investigation follows victim's parents' plea
The CBI's latest revelations are in response to a plea filed by the victim's parents, who are asking for further investigation into their daughter's tragic death.
The Supreme Court had earlier suggested they move the Calcutta HC for further action in the case.
The agency has now confirmed that it is probing the involvement of individuals in events after the crime to cover up this incident.
Legal debate
State questions revival of concluded investigation
During the hearing, a senior counsel for the state questioned the legality of reviving a closed investigation.
The trial had closed with Sanjoy Roy being sentenced to life for his role in the crime.
"Can a trial be revived? If it cannot be revived, how can you order further investigation after the conclusion of the trial?" she asked.
Court directive
CBI ordered to submit witness list and case diary
Considering the state's apprehensions, the court has asked CBI to submit a list of witnesses it has examined and the case diary it received from the Kolkata police when they took charge of the probe.
The deputy solicitor general stated a timeline couldn't be ensured at this stage as several aspects are being investigated by the agency.
