Ram Rahim Singh chargesheeted in forced mass castration case
The CBI has filed a chargesheet against former Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a 2014 castration case. Two of his followers have also been chargesheeted. Who is Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh?
Ram Rahim Singh, born on August 15, 1967, was the leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda since 1990 till August'17. He is known for his varied styles of discourses- from 'naam charcha' to 'ru-ba-ru nights'. The 'guru' has starred in movies based on himself ('Messenger of God'), where he rode bikes and performed miracles. He has released several albums, including one called 'Love Charger'.
All about the castration case against Ram Rahim
Four years ago, Hans Raj Chauhan, a Dera follower, alleged 400 devotees had been castrated at the sect's Sirsa headquarters. The men were allegedly manipulated: apparently, they were told such emasculation would take them closer to God. Doctors employed at the Dera were involved, complainants claimed. It wasn't an "act of humanity," the court noted, and ordered the CBI to probe the case.
Ram Rahim, serving prison time for rape, questioned in jail
Ram Rahim was sentenced in two decades-old rape cases last August. Now he has been charged as prime accused in the castration case, along with Dr. Pankaj Garg and Dr. MP Singh. The CBI questioned him in jail. Pending formalities will be completed by February 5.
The 'guru' has been accused of rapes, murders and abductions
The 'godman' has several criminal cases against him. He is accused of sexually exploiting 35-40 female followers. To cover up this crime, he allegedly had at least two whistleblowers murdered. In 2015, a man accused Singh and two others of abducting his wife when she had gone to the Dera headquarters. There are also reports of illegal arms training at the Sirsa campus.
