Assam: Case against BJP-minister for alleged rape, he cries conspiracy
A case was registered against Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain for allegedly raping and threatening a 24-year-old married woman in Assam's Nagaon district. In his defense, the BJP minister has filed a blackmail case against the woman. Officer on special duty, Sanjiv Goswami said the rape case has been withdrawn. But, police said they will continue the investigation and the case stands.
Woman and Gohain knew each other, incident is months old
An official at the Nagaon Police Station said the case was registered last week, but the incident happened around 7-8 months ago. Gohain and the woman knew each other for a long time and he often frequented her house. Gohain reportedly raped her when her husband and relatives weren't home. The official added the woman refused the medical examination and withdrew the case 2 days after complaining.
Will the minister be arrested? Police says probe on
When asked if the Union Minister will be arrested, the police official said the probe is underway. "The case still stands and it cannot be withdrawn. We will do our own investigation," said officer-in-charge Ananta Das. Notably, Gohain cried conspiracy and said these cases caught spotlight when he was about to contest elections. He added truth would be revealed soon.

Congress targets BJP, asks PM to remove Gohain from position
Striking at BJP over the allegations, Congress's Pawan Khera on Friday demanded Gohain's ouster. "Modiji, you have failed the test not once, not twice, not thrice, but almost a dozen times," he said. Khera asked the PM to remove Gohain from the position of influence for an impartial investigation. "Please remove him if you meant anything that you promised before 2014," Khera added.
