New Lok Sabha bill to slim down big-fat Indian wedding
Not everyone can afford a big fat Indian wedding. On that note, a new private bill has been introduced in the Lok Sabha aiming to curb extravagant spending on weddings. The bill introduced by Gopal Chinayya Shetty, a BJP legislator from North Mumbai intends to prevent "sheer extravagance and unlimited expenditure" associated with wedding ceremonies across the country. Here's more about it.
Context: Winter session of the Parliament
The Parliament is convening its winter session between 15 December, 2017 to 5 January, 2018. 98 private bills were reportedly introduced on December 29 including the bill to curb wedding extravagance and on constituting a board to protect stray cows.
Shetty's quest to trim the big fat Indian wedding
Speaking to DNA, he stated that he has been urging people in his constituency to cut down wedding expenses and instead help poor persons get married. "I am not saying that those who have money should not spend, but some kind of equality should be there," he added. He also stated that the bill has been introduced to initiate a conversation on the subject.
Will the bill get passed?
Without government's backing, private bills hardly ever pass in the Lok Sabha. Only 14 such private bills have been passed since independence. Therefore, the odds of Shetty's bill becoming a law are very low.
