Bus accident in Uttarakhand claims 23 lives
At least 23 pilgrims from the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh lost their lives in a bus accident that took place on Tuesday in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi. Sources say the pilgrims travelled to Dehradun by train and were enroute Kedarnath by bus, when it fell into the Bhagirathi river in Uttarkashi. The victims belonged to a group travelling for a pilgrimage of 'Char dham.'
Details of the accident
Rescue operations were conducted with the assistance of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, State Disaster Response Force, but they faced difficulties due to darkness. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh for the deceased's kin. Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat too, announced a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to the deceased's kin and Rs. 50,000 to those injured.
