    What's the story

In a first, the prestigious IIT-Bombay has bagged the 9th position in the list of top 10 universities in BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa).

The institute also tops the list among 79 Indian universities which were surveyed.

Three other institutes, Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore), IIT-Delhi and IIT-Madras have also found a place in the top 20.

    Here's more about it.

    Details

Good work, sincere efforts: How IIT-Bombay broke into the list

IIT-Bombay climbed up four positions from last year's ranking to reach the 9th position.

Quacquarelli Symonds, which compiled the list, gave the institute 83.6/100 after assessing ten parameters, including academic and employer reputation, and faculty-student ratio, with employer-reputation being a decisive parameter.

"The ranking reflects the progress made by the institute in core areas of work," states Devang Khakhar, the director of the institute.

    About

How did the other Indian universities fare?

Out of 79 private and government universities surveyed, 7 Indian universities, including University of Delhi, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Madras, and IIT-Kanpur broke into the top-50.

IISc (Bangalore) which was ranked 6th last year has found itself at the 10th position this year.

Among private universities, BITS Pilani was ranked the highest at 109th, followed by Thapar University at 137 and Symbiosis International University at 144.

    Information

    Chinese universities retain top positions

China continued to dominate the top three positions on the list. Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Fudan University retained the first, second and third positions, respectively.

    Conclusion

Should a similar ranking system be introduced in India?

The top 10 private/public universities listed in the BRICS-rankings were recently felicitated by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Speaking at the function, UGC Chairman, VS Chauhan underlined the relevance of rankings and stated they help students choose from the best. "But sometimes it is overplayed," he added.

He also said that there is scope for a "similar ranking-system to be introduced in India."
