Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is a Judge of the Supreme Court of India and has formerly served as a Judge in the Bombay High Court. Born in Amravati, Maharashtra, Gavai started practicing as a lawyer in the late 1980s, specializing in Constitutional Law and Administrative Law. He has served as Standing Counsel for the Municipal Corporations of Nagpur, Municipal Corporation of Amravati, and the Amravati University. During 1992-93, Gavai was the Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor in the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench, and in 2000, was designated as the Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor. In 2003, he was appointed as Additional Judge in the Bombay High Court, becoming its permanent Judge in 2005. Gavai was elevated as a Judge to the Supreme Court of India in 2019 and is in line to become only the second Dalit Chief Justice of India (CJI).
