Bihar gets 20 specially-trained dogs to bust illegal alcohol trade
In a crackdown against liquor sale in the state, the Bihar government has requested 20 special dogs from Telangana to sniff out alcohol. The dogs will be trained for 8-9 months in Telangana, Vinay Kumar, Additional Director General of Police (CID), Bihar, said. Liquor was banned in Bihar two years ago, and now the government is tightening its claws on the illegal trade.
After exhaustive search, Bihar police finally finds right dogs
Before zeroing in on Telangana, the Bihar police launched an exhaustive search for dogs who can sniff out alcohol. They learned about a dog-training program at Telangana's Intelligence Integrated Training Academy (IITA), where canines are trained to detect both explosives and alcohol. Initially, 20 dogs will be brought to Bihar, and if the plan is successful, more will follow.
Since 2016, over 1 lakh arrested for violating liqour ban
Since the 2016 ban, over 1.15 lakh people have been arrested for selling or consuming both domestic and foreign alcohol in Bihar. The dogs will now be deployed in Patna, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga and Muzzafarpur "to sharpen campaign against illegal stocking of alcohol in Bihar."
Meanwhile, Bihar government also wants to ban 'khaini'
Bihar is now planning to ban 'khaini', a processed tobacco product, which, according to Principal Secretary (Health) Sanjay Kumar, is chewed by every fifth citizen in the state. The government has already written to the Center to direct the FSSAI to declare tobacco a food product. Once it becomes a food product, the government can put a blanket ban on it on health grounds.
