Bihar: Teen dies after 'quack' performs surgery using YouTube tutorials
A teenage boy named Golu, also known as Krishna Kumar, died in Saran district, Bihar, after an unqualified medical practitioner allegedly performed a gall bladder-stone removal surgery on him using YouTube videos as guidance. The accused, Ajit Kumar Puri, was arrested from Gopalganj district on Sunday night following the incident. Superintendent of Police (SP) Saran Kumar Ashish confirmed Puri's arrest to PTI on Monday.
What the victim's family said
Golu had been experiencing stomach pain and was taken to a private clinic at Dharmabagi Bazar in Saran on Friday. Following his admission, Puri decided to perform gall bladder surgery after watching YouTube videos. Golu's condition deteriorated post-surgery, and he was rushed to Patna but tragically died en route on September 7. "Puri sent me to bring some diesel while my wife remained there," Prahlad Prasad, Golu's grandfather said.
Family accuses Puri of negligence and malpractice
"When I came back, I saw Puri was operating my grandson by watching a video on YouTube. He had not taken permission from us for conducting the gall bladder-stone removal surgery," Prasad added. After Golu's death, Puri allegedly fled the scene, leaving Golu's body behind. The family has accused him of negligence and malpractice, claiming that he was unqualified and inexperienced which led to Golu's death.
Police initiate action against Puri and his clinic
The police have registered a case against Puri and his clinic staff and are conducting raids to apprehend them. Golu's body has been sent for a postmortem. Commenting on the incident, Saran SP said, "Puri has been arrested and the district police are in the process of initiating action against his clinic also." The district police have also launched a drive to identify such clinics.
