Bengaluru residents to witness 'Zero Shadow Day' tomorrow
Residents of Bengaluru will have the opportunity to witness a unique celestial event known as "Zero Shadow Day." This fascinating occurrence is scheduled to take place between 12:17 pm and 12:23 pm. During this time, the sun will be positioned directly overhead, resulting in the disappearance of all shadows. The rare phenomenon will also be observed in other cities including Kanyakumari, Bhopal, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.
Zero shadow day occurs in areas near the equator
The "Zero Shadow Day" phenomenon typically occurs in areas near the equator where the sun's angle is almost perpendicular to Earth's surface, causing objects to appear shadowless. This event is due to Earth's orbit around the sun, which alters its sky position and results in varying seasons. The Astronomical Society of India states that this event happens twice a year in locations between latitudes +23.5 and -23.5 degrees.
In Bengaluru, 'Zero Shadow Day' is typically observed around April
In Bengaluru, "Zero Shadow Day" is typically observed around April 24/25 and again on August 18 each year. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Bengaluru has organized events at its Koramangala campus to celebrate this day. The public is invited to participate in activities from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm that involve observing and measuring changing shadow lengths of objects.
Here's when other cities will witness 'Zero Shadow Day'
Kanyakumari witnesses this event twice an year, on April 10 and September 1 every year. Meanwhile, Hyderabad residents see it on May 9 and August 5/ Western city of Mumbai witnesses this event on May 15 and June 27 while central city of Bhopal on June 13 and June 28. This celestial event not only offers a moment of wonder but also serves as an educational opportunity that highlights the intricate movements of celestial bodies.
