Ayodhya Ram temple's chief priest Satyendra Das dies at 85

Acharya Satyendra Das, the chief priest of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, died on Wednesday at the age of 85.
He was being treated at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow after suffering a brain stroke.
His disciple, Pradeep Das, confirmed his demise and said his cremation will be held by the banks of the Saryu River in Ayodhya on Thursday.

Priest's health and political reactions to his demise
Acharya Das was admitted to SGPGI on February 3 in a critical condition after suffering a brain stroke. He had first been treated at a private hospital in Ayodhya before being referred to SGPGI for advanced care.
The chief priest was also battling diabetes and hypertension.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences, describing the priest's death as "an irreparable loss."

Acharya Das's significant role in Ayodhya's religious affairs
Acharya Das had been serving as the chief priest since he was 20.
He was the chief priest when the Babri Masjid was demolished. Before the demolition, he had relocated the idols to the nearby Fakire Mandir and later installed them in a makeshift temple at Ram Janmabhoomi.
Recently, he attended the first anniversary celebrations of the Pran Pratistha ceremony of the Ram Lalla idol on January 11, calling it "very beautiful."

Known for his media engagement, Acharya Das was often sought after for insights on temple developments and religious affairs in Ayodhya.
He also featured in the 2024 documentary series "The Battle of Ayodhya," which delved into the Ayodhya dispute.
