Assam: Mob lynched Muslim quack to death for raping minor
On Thursday, a mob in Assam's Sitoi Adong village lynched a Muslim quack to death, after he was accused of rape by two women, including a minor. The deceased, identified as 45-year-old Hussain Ali, belonged to Raikata Sandanpur in Hojai district and was popular in the area for "healing people". However, when residents learned of his real actions, they lost cool and attacked him.
Ali 'treated' women behind closed doors, alleged locals
Taking advantage of superstitious beliefs of locals, Ali had been running his business for a long time. He "treated" both men and women, but gave "special attention" to latter. "He used to treat women in a closed room," locals told NE. On Wednesday (July 3), Ali took a girl inside a room to "treat her", but allegedly sexually abused her.
On Thursday, Ali returned to village, was beaten to death
Ali returned a day later to "heal" another girl. Staying true to his habit, he took the girl inside a room. In the meantime, villagers got a whiff of his actions. As Ali was leaving, a mob gathered around and thrashed him. Subsequently, the village head informed Dongkamukam police outpost about the incident. Police reached the spot and rushed Ali to a hospital.
No one is above law, said SP condemning the incident
Though police rescued Ali, he succumbed to injuries and was declared brought dead by Civil Hospital. Mrinal Talukdar, SP of West Karbi Anglong district, said police received a call at 10:30 AM. Condemning the mob lynching incident, he said locals should have informed the police. "We could have taken action as per law. Nobody can be above the law," he underlined.
Reportedly, two cases have been registered
"The police went back to the spot and on questioning found that in the name of practising kabiraji, Ali behaved inappropriately with two girls which led to the incident," Talukdar said. Reportedly, two cases, one for lynching and another for rape, have been registered.
