Aspiring-models, promised Rs. 1L/day for assignments, duped by fraudsters

What's the story

Nearly a dozen aspiring models were duped of lakhs in Delhi after they were promised contracts with a Dutch firm. The fraudster asked the victims for their account details to transfer money but ended up looting them. The aspiring models were promised Rs. 1 lakh per day for assignments, TOI reports. A case under Section 420 (cheating) of IPC has been registered.

How it happened

Suspect told victims he was looking for male/female models

The cheater contacted the models through social media and informed them about a photoshoot. One of the victims, a 20-year-old Delhi University student, said he received a message. The suspect said he was a senior agent working with a Dutch firm and was looking for male and female models. The victims bought the story.

Details

Models were told they would get paid in Euros

The supposed agent then asked the complainant to come to a Mahipalpur hotel on June 28, where six-seven female models were already present. "He offered us Rs. 1 lakh per day for the three-day shoot and told us that the payment would be done in Euros," the complainant revealed. The models were asked to stay in the hotel as the shoot 'would start early'.

The act

The 'agent' took models' phones to access passwords

An investigating officer revealed the suspect then asked models to give last six digits of their ATM cards, bank account details and mobile phones, which he apparently used to access their passwords. Late at night, the youth was awakened by noises of girls' in the adjacent room. One of the girls had gone to the agent's room to get her phone and was shocked.

Police are scanning CCTV footage to learn about conmen

The girls found that the suspect's room was locked; on questioning the receptionist it was learned he left. He didn't answer the calls either. Police believe the conman duped the models of Rs. 5 lakh. They are scanning CCTV footage of the hotel to ascertain their identity and also probing phone numbers as well as social media accounts that were used for the fraud.
