Ashok Kamte: News
Born on February 23, 1965, Ashok Kamte was an Indian Police Officer and Additional Commissioner of the Mumbai Police (East region), who was martyred during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. His father was Lieutenant-Colonel Marutirao Narayanrao Kamte and his grandfather was Naryanrao, who was the first Indian Inspector-General of Maharashtra Police. Belonging to a family heavily involved in police services, Kamte completed his schooling at Kodaikanal International School and graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, and St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He also represented India in the 1978 junior power-lifting championship held in Peru. On November 26, 2008, Kamte along with Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) Chief Hemant Karkare, police officer Vijay Salaskar and three constables was killed during retaliatory action with two terrorists, one of which was Ajmal Kasab, in a narrow lane between St. Xavier’s College and the Rang Bhavan, near the Crime Branch office in Mumbai. He was cremated on November 27, 2008, at Vaikunth crematorium with state honors, and was posthumously conferred with Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military decoration award on January 26, 2009. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
