Nine of the army's Super-40 batch clear IIT-JEE this time
Formed along the lines of mathematician Anand Kumar's Super-30, the Indian Army in Kashmir has been running its own Super-40 program for the IIT entrance exam since the last three years. This year, nine of them cleared the JEE Advanced. They will now be admitted to the prestigious IITs. From the same batch, 26 boys and 2 girls had cleared the Mains.
What's the program?
The army selects candidates through an entrance test and interview conducted at various institutions throughout the state. Selected students are provided free accommodation and coaching in Srinagar for 11 months, sponsored by Petronet LNG. From next year, due to the project's resounding success, they have decided to increase the strength to 50.
The achievement graph rising higher and higher
Meenakshi Shai, chief manager of the Super-40 project, reported the success rate had been increasing. The first time, none cleared the exam, but in 2016, 25 of 30 students cleared the Mains and 7 qualified in Advanced. This time, considering five of 40 students didn't appear for the Mains, the success rate was 80%. It was also the first time five girls joined.
The successful candidates of 2017
This time Aqib Amin, Bashir Ahmed, Feroz Ahmed, Imtiyaz Hussain, Jahangir Shakeel, Maisam Ali, Mh Mussa, Nasir Ali and Shahid Sultan cleared the Advanced. Of the 28 students who had cleared the Mains, nine came from South Kashmir, the hotbed of terrorism in the Valley.
