Aadhaar mess-up: 800 families of Uttarakhand-village born on January 1
According to the Aadhaar cards of about 800 families living in Gaindi Khata, a village near Haridwar, all of them were born on January 1. This, despite the villagers submitting their ration cards and voter IDs to provide correct information to the private agency that made the Aadhaar cards. UIDAI officials, however, have refused to accept or take responsibility for the glaring goof-up.
With glaring mistakes, how authentic are Aadhaar cards really?
The residents of Gaindi Khata aren't the first to find January 1 as their date of birth on Aadhaar cards. In August, several children of Agra district faced the same problem: their Aadhaar cards also stated they were all born on January 1. Around 1,000 villagers near Allahabad complained of the same issue earlier in May, pointing at grave implementational and administrative loopholes.
Villagers worry they may lose out on Aadhaar-related government schemes
With their dates of birth and ages all messed up, villagers worry that they won't be able to reap the benefits of Aadhaar-related social welfare government schemes such as Employees' Pension Scheme (1995), housing subsidy benefit, crop insurance schemes, targeted public distribution system and MGNREGA. The government needs to clean up its act quick if it wants people to continue to believe in Aadhaar.
