What's the story

A second-year student of Amity University in Noida has been arrested on charges of abetment to suicide after her classmate, Tapas, allegedly jumped off a seventh-floor apartment at Supreme Towers in Sector 99, TOI reported.

Tapas, an LLB student from Ghaziabad, ended his life after the accused, who is his ex-girlfriend, allegedly refused to get back together.

The police were alerted after Tapas's body was found in a secluded area behind the tower.

An autopsy revealed injuries on multiple parts of his body.

After Tapas's father complained against the woman for harassment, an FIR was registered under Section 108 for abetment to suicide.

NDTV, citing sources, said Tapas and his ex-girlfriend were classmates. They moved in together shortly after their romance began, but the woman ended the relationship.

In an attempt to persuade his ex-girlfriend to reconcile with him, his friends had also called her. She attended the party but stated that she had no intention of reconciling with Tapas.

The probe has found that Tapas was upset by this and leaped from the seventh story, falling to his death.

Supreme Court grants bail to accused woman

The Supreme Court had earlier clarified that for an abetment to suicide charge under Section 306 of IPC (now part of BNS), there must be "direct and alarming encouragement/incitement by the accused leaving no option but to commit suicide."

The court granted the woman bail after observing her refusal to reconcile didn't amount to abetment.

The police have questioned other students at the party and are probing all angles of this case.

DCP (Noida) Ram Badan Singh told TOI, "The father of the boy submitted a complaint on Saturday night and subsequently an FIR under BNS Section 108 for abetment of suicide was filed."

He said they have investigated the case from all possible angles before arresting her.

The police are yet to clarify what evidence led them to make an arrest in this case.
