In Alwar, Rajasthan, a man named Akbar Khan was lynched by a mob on suspicion of cow-smuggling. Reports said 28-year-old Khan and his unnamed accomplice were attacked by a mob in Ramgarh. The duo was transporting cattle to Haryana on Friday. This incident again emphasises why making a law against mob vigilantism is absolutely necessary in the country. Here's more about it.
Has Rajasthan become safe place for vigilantes?
Unfortunately, this is not the first such incident in Rajasthan. The truth is Rajasthan has failed to take action against those who take the law into their hands. In 2017, an unruly mob killed dairy farmer Pehlu Khan. In November 2017, the body of Umar Mohammed was found on railway tracks and his relatives alleged he was killed by a mob.
This attack comes days after SC condemned mob-lynching
Earlier this week, a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra directed the Parliament to form a law against mob lynchings. "Horrendous acts of mobocracy can't be allowed," the bench which also included AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud observed. Further, the top court also listed preventive and punitive steps to curb the crime.
Meanwhile, PM Modi spoke about mob-lynching in Lok Sabha
Addressing the Lok Sabha on Friday during debate on the no-confidence motion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Any instance of violence brings shame to the nation. I will once again urge the state governments to punish those who indulge in violence." Earlier, Home Minister Rajnath Singh had also passed the buck to states and asked them to act against mob-violence.
