Born on September 7, 1967, Alok Sharma is an Indian born-English politician who is serving as the President of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). He is associated with the Conservative Party in Great Britain and has served under various positions in the British government. Born in Agra, his parents moved to England when he was five years old. He completed his education at the University of Salford. He represents the Reading West constituency, a neighborhood he grew up in, as a Member of Parliament. Between 2017 and 2020, Sharma was the Minister of State for Housing, Minister of State for Employment, Secretary of State for International Development, and Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy in the British government. Between 2012 and 2015, he served as the Vice-Chairman for Conservative Party, and in 2014 was inducted as the co-chairman of Conservative Friends of India. Sharma was instrumental in introducing the National Security and Investment Act 2021 in the British parliament, and for the purchase of half of OneWeb, a satellite communications company, for $500 million by the UK government.
