#UPSCresults: Meet Kanishak Kataria, topper of UPSC Civil Services Examination-2018
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has declared the much-awaited final results of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2018 on Friday. On the basis of the written Main Examination and Personality Test interviews, 759 candidates were recommended for appointment to various Civil Services. Kanishak Kataria, an IIT-Bombay graduate, has emerged as the topper of the CSE 2018. Here's more on the IAS exam topper.
Kataria cracked CSE in first-attempt; didn't expect to top it
Kanishak Kataria has successfully cracked the UPSC Civil Services Examination in his very first attempt, according to a BBC Hindi report. He is an alumnus of IIT Bombay and hails from Jaipur. He told BBC Hindi that he did not expect to top the CSE.
Kanishak Kataria graduated from IIT-B in 2014
The CSE 2018 topper, Kanishak Kataria, pursued Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B), according to his LinkedIn profile. He graduated from IIT Bombay in 2014 reportedly with a cumulative GPA of 9.07. He belongs to the SC (Scheduled Caste) category and has qualified the CSE Main Examination with Mathematics as the optional subject.
He is currently working at QPLUM in Bengaluru
Kanishak Kataria is currently working as a Data Scientist at QPLUM in Bengaluru, according to his LinkedIn profile. He had also worked for Samsung Electronics as a Software Engineer until February 2016 in South Korea. Kataria's LinkedIn profile also shows he was part of IIT Bombay's Placement Cell as a Company Coordinator while at the institute. He was also a Teaching Assistant at IIT-B.
Kataria had secured AIR 44 in 2010 IIT JEE
Before joining IIT Bombay, Kanishak Kataria had secured All India Rank (AIR) 44 in the 2010 IIT JEE test. The same year, he secured AIR 24 in the AIEEE test. He had done his schooling from St. Paul's Senior Secondary School in Rajasthan's Kota.
Kataria took coaching for 7-8 months in Delhi
To prepare for the Civil Services Examination, Kataria attended IAS coaching classes for 7-8 months in Delhi, he told BBC Hindi. He also revealed that he did not have any idea about the UPSC CSE and that is why he had to take coaching to get to know the basics. However, from March last year, he prepared for the exam through self-study at home.
How many hours did he study for in a day?
Kanishak Kataria also revealed how many hours he studied for while preparing for UPSC CSE. He told BBC Hindi that before the Main Examination, he used to study for 8-10 hours a day. But, as the exam neared, he studied for 15 hours every day.
