ISRO's Young Scientist Programme for school students: Registration ends soon
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) announced the launch of a special two-week Young Scientist Programme or YUva VIgyani KAryakram (YUVIKA) for school children. It was rolled out in tune with the Center's Jai Vigyan, Jai Anusandhan vision. Under this, three students each from every State/Union Territory covering CBSE, ICSE, and State syllabus will participate. Here's everything you want to know about the programme.
Programme will be conducted during summer holidays
YUVIKA will be conducted for school children during their summer holidays (second-half of May). The programme includes talks and experience-sharing sessions by eminent scientists, facility and lab visits, exclusive discussion sessions with experts, and practical and feedback sessions. The initiative aims to "catch them young" and impart basic knowledge to students on space technology, space science, and space applications, and create awareness amongst youngsters.
Who all are eligible to participate?
School children who have just completed Class 9 (in the 2018-19 academic year) and are waiting to join Class 10 or those who have joined Class 10 will be eligible for the programme. Candidates would be selected for the YUVIKA programme based on their academic performance in Class 8 and other extracurricular activities. Eligible candidates can register online for the programme.
Special weightage given to students from rural areas: ISRO
"Students belonging to the rural area have been given special weightage in the selection criteria. In case there is [a] tie between the selected candidates, the younger candidates will be given priority," ISRO stated on its official website.
How to register for ISRO's YUVIKA programme?
Interested students can register on ISRO's website; the registration began on 25 March and ends on 3 April (6:00 pm). According to ISRO, only a few seats are left. List of provisionally selected candidates will be announced on 6 April after which they will have to email attested copies of relevant certificates. After verification, the final selection list will be released on 13 April.
Selected students can stay in ISRO guesthouses, hostels
YUVIKA will be conducted at four ISRO centers. Selected students will be provided with accommodation in ISRO guesthouses/hostels. Students will be provided II AC fare by train to the reporting center and back. Their guardian/parent will also be given II AC fare for drop-off/pick-up of students. ISRO will also bear the expenditure towards candidates' course material, lodging, and boarding, etc. during the course period.
