    What's the story

An Andhra Pradesh man, addicted to alcohol and gambling, sold his wife and children to settle his debts, but the family was thankfully rescued.

The man named Pasupuleti Maddilety is an auto-driver and had debts amounting to Rs. 15 lakh.

He has five children- one son and four daughters and reportedly made the 'deal' for Rs. 6.5 lakh. His wife approached authorities in time.

Maddilety sold his 12-year-old daughter to a relative at Rs. 1.5 lakh to be married, once she reaches puberty.

He allegedly signed the 'contract' a few months ago.

"The girl has to be kept safe from any man's eyes till she becomes mature and is handed over," Maddilety's wife Venkatamma told Integral Child Development Services (ICDS) officers as she detailed conditions of the bond.

    Series of events

Maddilety tried making his wife sign the 'deal', she refused

The shady deals of Maddilety weren't known to his family for a long time.

He also tried convincing his wife, Venkatamma to 'sign the deal'. He was also ready to give his wife to his cousin.

When Venkatamma refused, Maddilety tortured her. She then ran off to her parents with the kids to protect them.

But Maddilety followed them there and harassed his wife.

    Action taken

Meanwhile, police have registered a case for domestic violence

Narrating the ordeal, Venkatamma said, "My husband says 'it is my wish. I will do what I want with my children', so I am really scared."

The kids aged 17 and 12 have been shifted to rehabilitation centres to ensure safety. The police have registered a case under Section 498A for domestic violence.

ICDS official Angela also said they would launch an investigation soon.
