Ahmedabad: Teacher slaps student, slams him against wall; detained
A maths teacher from Madhav Public School in Vatva, Ahmedabad, has been detained after a video surfaced showing him physically assaulting a student. The teacher, named Abhishek Patel, was caught on the classroom CCTV footage violently manhandling the student. Following the incident, Patel was suspended and later arrested by the Vatva police.
Teacher's suspension follows viral video
The video, which has since gone viral, shows Patel twisting the student's arm, pulling him by his hair, and forcefully pushing him against a wall. He also slapped the minor nearly a dozen times before pushing him to the ground. Following the video's circulation, the District Education Officer issued a notice to the principal of Madhav Public School and ordered Patel's suspension.
Legal action initiated against suspended teacher
Following Patel's suspension, he was taken into custody by Vatva police. Legal proceedings are currently underway against him for his actions. The incident has sparked a discussion about corporal punishment in Indian schools, which remains a common disciplinary method despite being illegal. In 2000, the Supreme Court banned corporal punishment in all educational institutions across India.
Corporal punishment violates children's rights
The Chhattisgarh High Court recently said that using physical violence to discipline a child in school is cruel and violates the child's right to life, as guaranteed by Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. The Right to Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, also criminalizes corporal punishment in schools. Additionally, such actions are deemed illegal under the Juvenile Justice Act of 2015.
