Dear Modiji, don't you forget, 'Janta Maaf Nahi Karegi'
Does 'Humari betiyon ko suraksha naa de paane wale logon, janta maaf nai karegi' ring a bell? It was the year 2014 and BJP amassed support for itself against UPA's incompetence. The Nirbhaya case had revealed people's anger. But in 2018, PM Narendra Modi's silence on Kathua and Unnao rape cases hints how atrocities against women were only used as cards to win elections.
Modi on Nirbhaya: 'Never forget'; Modi on Kathua, Unnao: 'Silence'
In 2013, he said, "It (Delhi) has earned a bad name as rape capital. When you vote, do not forget this. Remember Nirbhaya for a while." People remembered and gave BJP an astounding victory. Cut to 2018, an 8-year-old girl was sedated, kept in a temple and raped before getting murdered. In UP, a BJP MLA is accused of rape, and Modi chose silence.
Modi fails to live up to expectations after stunning victory
BJP's remarkable win in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections also meant citizens had humongous expectations from the party. As the supreme leader quick enough to express condolences on accidents or tweet congratulatory messages on success, it's past high time PM Modi addressed outrage in rape cases. More so, considering the prime accused in Unnao case is his party's MLA.

Rape Statistics: Modi-government didn't make country safe for women
For a leader who constantly repeats, 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao', statistics tell a different story. According to NCRB data, crimes against women witnessed a 2.9% jump from 2015 to 2016. 34,651 rape cases were reported in 2015, and 38,947 in 2016. Crimes against children went from 94,172 in 2015 to 1,06,958 in 2016. In Delhi alone, 1,996 rapes were reported in 2016.
