This express train journey costs just Rs. 10: Details here
At a time when transport costs, including train ticket prices, are on the rise, the Indian Railways has started offering a train journey for just Rs. 10. Unbelievable though it might sound, it's actually true. Passengers can now enjoy a trip from Garhi Harsaru to Farukhnagar in Haryana, in an express train, for just Rs. 10! Here are the details.
The Garhi Harsaru-Farukhnagar service uses a steam-engine hauled train
While the journey might cost Rs. 10, it's no ordinary journey. The Garhi Harsaru-Farukhnagar train journey uses a steam engine-hauled train. The service was introduced at the end of September this year, and is a service that runs all through the year. Further, the Rs. 10 fare is not an offer, but the normal ticket price for the journey.
The trains use steam locomotives from 1947
The journey is a 45 minute one, and uses WP7200 AZAD broad-gauge locomotives from 1947, made in the US. The forward journey (train no. 04445) departs at 9.30am from Garhi Harsaru and reaches Farukhnagar at 10.15am. The return journey (train no. 04446) starts at 11.15am.
Why is the Indian Railways offering rides for Rs. 10?
The objective of providing such cheap tickets is two-fold one. On one hand, it enables passengers to take an inexpensive ride on steam-engine hauled trains, which have been barred from service for over 25 years. On the other hand, it is meant to promote tourism in the area, and is meant to attract steam-engine lovers from all over India, and from abroad.
