68 bureaucrats including 39 IAS officers accused of corruption
Almost 70 bureaucrats are currently under the scanner for alleged corruption and other malpractices. The 39 IAS officers and 29 from the Central Secretariat Service facing proceedings consist of people on various levels. Charges were formed on the basis of complaints received and their service records. The Department of Personnel and Training, a nodal authority for IAS officers, is in charge of the proceedings.
Former coal secy HC Gupta was recently sentenced to jail
Just last month, a CBI special court sentenced former coal secretary HC Gupta and two other serving government officials to prison for irregularities in allocation of coal blocks in 2008. All three were fined Rs. 1L each. The incident jolted the Indian bureaucracy.
100 IAS officers were investigated for corruption during 2010-15
In fact, allegations of corruption against bureaucrats aren't uncommon. During 2010-2015, 100 IAS officers came under the scanner of the CBI. Of them, the Centre allowed prosecution of 66. Apart from them, 10 CSS Group A officers and 9 CBI Group A officers were also accused of corruption. The Centre approved prosecution of eight of the former and six of the latter.
67,000 govt employees being reviewed by the Centre
To check corruption in the bureaucracy, the Centre is reviewing service records of 67,000 employees. 25,000 are from all India and Group A services. According to rules, a government employee's performance is reviewed twice: the first time after 15 years of joining, and then again after 25 years. In the last year, 129 "non-performing" employees including IAS and IPS officers were given compulsory retirement.
