Seven jail officials suspended over VIP treatment to actor Darshan
Seven officials from the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bengaluru have been suspended following allegations of providing special treatment to Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa. The action was taken after a photograph and video showing the actor enjoying privileges while in custody went viral. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara confirmed the suspensions, describing it as a "serious security lapse."
Viral photograph sparks controversy
The controversy was triggered by a photograph of Darshan, currently in judicial custody in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case. The image depicts him sitting comfortably on a chair with a cigarette and coffee cup, accompanied by three other people. Reports suggest that those seen with Darshan include criminal Wilson Garden Naga, Nagaraj (the actor's manager and co-accused), and Kulla Seena (another inmate).
Public outrage over alleged preferential treatment
The incident has sparked widespread criticism, with many expressing their disapproval over the alleged preferential treatment given to Darshan. Kashinath S Shivanagowdru, the father of Renukaswamy, has demanded a thorough investigation and punishment for those responsible. "With such things, there is a feeling that a CBI probe should happen," he said.
Darshan's judicial custody extended
"When Darshan asked for home-cooked food, it wasn't permitted. We have belief in the police and the justice system. I am utterly surprised how did this happen. This is shocking news for me. I request the government to investigate and take action," the father said, according to the India Today. To recall, on August 21, a Bengaluru court extended the judicial custody of Darshan and others until Wednesday (August 28).
What is Renukaswamy murder case
The actor faces allegations in the murder of a 33-year-old rickshaw driver, Renukaswamy. Reportedly a fan of Darshan, Renukaswamy had sent hateful messages to the actor's partner, Pavithra Gowda. This is said to have led the actor to allegedly arrange for a gang to kidnap and kill Renukaswamy. The rickshaw driver's body was discovered on a flyover on June 9.
