Muzaffarnagar: 25 Dalits convert to Buddhism alleging discrimination
Twenty-five Dalits converted to Buddhism in Shamli district (Muzaffarnagar) in a ceremony performed by Bodh Bhikshu Bhante Pergyashil. Dalit leader Devidas Jayant, who also converted, said the steps were taken due to discrimination and atrocities against the community. Circle Officer Rajesh Kumar Tiwari said the event hadn't taken place under any coercion and that everyone had the freedom to follow any religion they desire.
Why Dalits choose Buddhism when they decide to convert?
This May, around 300 Dalits converted to Buddhism in Una (Gujarat). The community keeps on embracing Buddhism since their leader, BR Ambedkar, chose the religion when he decided to leave Hinduism. Also, the discrimination they face from the Hindu community pushes them further towards Buddhism.
