Real-life 'Pehredaar Piya Ki'? 23-year-old Andhra woman marries 13-year-old boy
The regressive story of a 10-year-old boy getting married to an 18-year-old girl in Sony show 'Pehredaar Piya Ki' was heavily criticized. But the bizarre tale seems to have inspired an unusual wedding between a 23-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy in Andhra Pradesh. The two were married in Upparahal village of Kurnool district in April, but it grabbed media attention only recently.
Groom's-mother fixed wedding to have someone 'take care' of him
The groom's mother, who is terminally ill, took this decision as she was upset with her drunkard husband. She wanted someone mature to take care of her son. The 13-year-old is the eldest among his siblings and has a younger brother and two sisters. Both families met in Bengaluru and fixed April 27 as the wedding date. Close relatives and friends attended the function.
District administration warns couple of legal action
The district administration learned of the wedding through social media. When the officials rushed to the village, the newlyweds were nowhere to be seen. The administration warned the family of action and asked the couple to surrender as the marriage was illegal. Parents of both the bride and groom are laborers. This case puts the spotlight on the menace of child-marriage corroding rural India.
