At least 22 killed as boat capsizes on the Yamuna
At least 22 people drowned when a boat carrying 60 people capsized on the Yamuna in UP's Baghpat. According to reports, six bodies have been recovered. Meanwhile, 12 have been rescued and rushed to hospital. Teams of NDRF and police are involved in rescue operations at the site. Most of the victims were laborers. They were travelling from Bhagpat's Katha village to Sonipat, Haryana.
According to locals, overcrowding led to the disaster
Sources said the boat, which had a capacity of 35, was overcrowded, leading to its capsize. Locals said response was delayed too, and blocked the Delhi-Saharanpur highway in protest. UP CM Yogi Adityanath has announced compensation of Rs. 2L for kin of each victim.
