Army's 2-star Generals to attend short-courses to sharpen skills
The Army has cleared a proposal to allow Major Generals in the force to attend short-duration courses to sharpen their leadership skills, given the ever changing military technology landscape and geopolitical developments. The courses, syllabus and other modalities are yet to be worked out. It was cleared at the Army Commanders conference chaired by Army Chief General Bipin Rawat last week.
Need for the move
After reaching the level of a 1-star general, education and competitive training programmes virtually stop for officers. The National Defence College has an 11 month course for brigadiers, but it only takes 40 brigadiers. Moreover, the course is limited to strategic studies. In addition, none of the courses offer views on modernized military technology/tactics, changing geopolitical landscapes and other challenges.
Need to train officers to lead
Army sources stated that the existing training programmes for senior officers, "focuses only on security and strategic issues at the national and international levels...it does not train an officer for taking command of a division, with around 15,000 soldiers, as a Major General."
