Delhi violence: 2 SITs to probe case; all FIRs transferred
Days after communal violence erupted in Northeast Delhi, two Special Investigation Teams (SITs) were formed on Thursday to probe the case. The two teams will immediately take over the investigation in the case and all FIRs registered in connection with the communal violence have been transferred. The development comes as the death toll in the case reportedly rose to 38. Here are more details.
DCPs Joy Tirkey, Rajesh Deo will head 2 SITs
Reportedly, the two SITs will be headed by Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) Joy Tirkey and Rajesh Deo, Delhi Police announced on Thursday. Each team will have Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) along with three inspectors, four sub-inspectors and three head constables or constables. The work of both teams will be monitored by the Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) BK Singh.
48 FIRs transferred; probe to begin immediately
All 48 FIRs related to the violence have been transferred to the two SITs already and investigations will begin immediately. Earlier on Thursday, Delhi Police PRO MS Randhawa said, "We have multiple footages. As the investigation progresses in all the cases, we will share the details. We are investigating from all angles." He also said that no incidents of violence were reported on Thursday.
What's happening in Northeast Delhi?
The violence started on Sunday in Delhi's Maujpur between protesters for and against the Citizenship Amendment Act. It continued in Bhajanpura, Jaffrabad, Gokulpuri, among other regions, killing 38 and injuring over 200 by Thursday. The violence reportedly witnessed stone pelting, arson, gun firing, etc. Homes, vehicles, schools, religious sites were vandalized. Accused of laxity and unprofessionalism, the police resorted to tear gas-shelling.
