    1999 fake currency case: Non-bailable warrant against Dawood Ibrahim

    What's the story

    The Mumbai Police successfully secured a non-bailable warrant against Dawood Ibrahim in the 1999 fake currency case.

    The judge questioned the odd move after years, the prosecution said that the "police had sanction to prosecute Dawood under MCOCA".

    The police had, however, never requested for a warrant or an investigation against Dawood.

    After a couple of hearings, the court granted the warrant against Dawood.

    1999 fake currency case- Police seizes Rs. 10.5 lakh

    The police arrested Gulab Jethanand Khemnani and Salim Yaqub Kara with Rs. 5.50 lakh in fake currency.

    Their arrests led to the seizure of Rs. 5 lakh more from Pakistani nationals Mohammed Parvez Mohammed Jaffar Soda; Kishore Chetanmal Lalwani and Ashok Awasti.

    Four others- Gullu Ghansham Hashmatrai Lakhani, Tejas Manjibhai Patel, Ajgarali Kurban Hussain Mandsarewala, and Raju Ramchand Sachdeo were arrested subsequently.

    Court convicts 9 to 10 years jail

    Gulab Jethanand Khemnani revealed that the fake currency had been sent by Dawood's aide Mohammed Tariq Khan alias Baba from Pakistan.

    Khemnani said that his friend Kishore Chetanmal Lalwani had told him about Dawood's plans of flooding India with the fake currency.

    The court convicted the 9 men to 10 years in prison, no warrants were issued against Dawood Ibrahim.

    Who is Dawood Ibrahim?

    Dawood Ibrahim was the son of a Mumbai/mumbai-police'>Mumbai Police constable. He started his life of crime as a member of Haji Mastan gang in the Dongri area of Mumbai.

    Dawood who later took over the gang was mostly involved in drug trafficking and providing transportation for illegal activities.

    Cricket betting and producing Bollywood movies too were part of his gang's activities.

    Sentence halved, still no mention of Dawood

    The High Court upheld their conviction on December 20, 2006, but halved their sentences. No warrants were issued against Dawood.

    Mumbai police wakes up, seeks a non-bailable warrant for Dawood

    The Mumbai Police initiated efforts to consolidate Dawood's criminal activities into a database, and to that effect want a non-bailable warrant against Dawood Ibrahim.

    The news that Dawood has been suffering from multiple ailments may have triggered this alert.

    He is reportedly also suffering from crippling gangrene and receiving treatment in the Clifton neighbourhood of Karachi, making it easy to catch him.
