'First off, relax...': Writer Will Smith jokes about Oscar slap
Will Smith, the British comedy writer-producer behind Apple TV+'s Slow Horses, humorously addressed the infamous 2022 Oscars incident involving his namesake during his acceptance speech at the Emmy Awards on Monday. Upon winning the award for Writing for a Drama Series, Smith quipped, "First off, relax. Despite my name, I come in peace." The remark was a reference to when American actor Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock after a joke about his wife-actor Jada Pinkett Smith.
Smith acknowledged 'Slow Horses' team in acceptance speech
In his acceptance speech, Smith also expressed gratitude toward Mick Herron, the author of the Slough House books on which Slow Horses is based. He further acknowledged Jay Hunt, the Europe boss of Apple TV+, and his team of writers. "And most of all, Gary Oldman and all of the actors" on the show were also mentioned in Smith's thank-you note.
