Will Jack Quaid's 'Companion' have a sequel? Director explores possibilities
What's the story
The critically acclaimed Hollywood film Companion, directed by Drew Hancock and starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, has been garnering critical acclaim.
However, despite its success, Hancock recently revealed in an interview with Inverse that a sequel is not currently planned.
He explained this decision by stating that the narrative of the film is already complete as it stands.
Director's insight
Hancock's vision for a potential sequel
Hancock shared his vision for a potential sequel, which would be different from the usual horror.
He said, "I told my story. My sequel would be like, she goes off, she uses the $12 million to buy a farm, and then she just spends the rest of her life farming the land and watching the sunset."
"I think Iris isn't looking to create a robot revolution. She's just wanting to live very human moments."
Iris is played by Thatcher.
Plans
Hancock explained his 'little seeds of ideas'
In a separate interview with Variety, the director explained, "I have little seeds of ideas."
"I think...What does she see when she's put to sleep? Because she's going to have to have rest mode at some point. Is she living in that grocery store and there's a meet-cute every time she's put to sleep?"
"I understand that Warner Bros. probably wouldn't be interested in that version," he continues, laughing. "So I'm not gonna push it.
Film's impact
'Companion's narrative uniqueness and standalone success
Despite many horror films birthing sequels because of their box office success, Companion's story doesn't allow for further digging.
The lack of a sequel doesn't take away from the film's success, as reviews have praised its entertaining premise and stellar cast.
Hancock joins directors like David Robert Mitchell (It Follows), Jennifer Kent (The Babadook), and Ari Aster (Hereditary) who have kept their horror films standalone.
